about

The Ordinary Odyssey is a concept album based around the idea of beautiful everyday things, exploring normal, average experiences that somehow still are overwhelmingly intense.

The Ordinary Odyssey shares the goals of all recent CaptainCreepy releases which are better production value and more interesting/complex harmony. This album distinguishes itself from the others by striving to be more intense, louder, more emotional. In this album, arrangements are denser, the orchestration more developed, the sound bigger.

Thematically, the Ordinary Odyssey is ultimately about innocence, coming of age, curiosity and exploration. It's about the creation of one's identity, it's about first times, it's about a person finally opening their eyes to the world around them, finding new perspectives. It's about going through life.

Musically, the Ordinary Odyssey is a mix of "cinematic" orchestral music with pop-rock and post-rock ideas. The album is structured around three "Acts" each with their respective tones and ideas. This album also introduces recurring musical themes/motifs associated with specific ideas.

The first theme, which is the most prominent, is associated with change. It's the catalyst, the backbone of all the album. It's a fast descending minor line, often repeating and then resolving into a minor harmonic scale. It is the first and the last melody you'll hear in this record.

The second theme is associated with strong, intense emotion. It's most prominent in the second act. The main motif is a natural minor melody, while the B section varies from track to track. Most of the time, the B section jumps around the major sixth, or around natural harmonic tones.

The third and final theme, featured in the third act is about resolution and acceptance. It's also associated with determination, confidence, finality and consequences. It'a a heavier, slower minor theme that resolves triumphantly in natural major.

There are many more melodies, motifs and themes in the album, some recurring, some not, but the last three are the most important.
